Try and be a sheet of paper with nothing on it.
Be a spot of ground where nothing is growing,
where something might be planted,
a seed possibly, from the Absolute. – Rumi

OPENSPACE is pleased to present Coming Home, a group show curated by Mustafa Farhad. The selected works bear witness to the hidden patterns that line the inner landscape of souls, revealing the common thread that weaves through the darkness of the unconscious, unfolding the light hidden there, unveiling the essential ‘face we had before we were born’. The exhibition demonstrates a receptivity of heart that opens the collective doorway to the moment, welcoming the unexpected, embracing the transient nature of existence. The diverse collection, which hails from a group of artists working in a variety of mediums, shares knowledge of the heart, the continuous unfolding of the inner journey, from separation to wholeness.

As Coming Home suggests, this is a shared journey to, from, and within open space, where boundaries of the individual dissolves and merges with creation, allowing energy to flow. Though the path of each artist is distinct and unique, in ‘the company of friends’, we work together to align ourselves with the essence, opening to what lies beyond.

The group show also highlights the nomadic nature of OPENSPACE gallery, a formless and traceless caravan of dreams, appearing from moment to moment, place to place, in this plane. OPENSPACE is beyond definition, both manifest and hidden, full of vibrant energy and light, unfolding from the consciousness of the Beloved.

The heart is the spring at the center of a clearing within the uncharted forest of creation. Here, what is human, irradiated by Divine Love, transforms into what is Divine. There is nothing other than perfect humanity-which is simply the conscious realization that God alone exists.
-Lex Hixon – Atom from the Sun of Knowledge

FEBRUARY 4, 2011
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
EXHIBITION EXTENDED THROUGH FEBRUARY 26, 2011 PARIS AND SELECTED WORKS – PIPI
AT OPENSPACE | ATELIER

The solo exhibition by pipi – Paris and Selected Works – has been extended through to February 26, 2011, at OPENSPACE, 9 North Moore Street, Tribeca | New York City. Please drop by, call or email for appointment.

Paris is a sufi dream-voyage in photographs taken with a Diana camera by pipi. The images are hauntingly beautiful and surreal, characteristic of the NewYork-based artist’s penchant for capturing hidden nuances of the world around her.

Dead Ballerina is a large-scale painterly photograph of the artist herself. It references shavasana or “to die before you die” inspiring trust in life. The image distills the serenity of a deeply personal journey.

About the artist:
pipi is a NYC-based artist. Her painterly images unveil layers of emotion within the everyday. The stories implicit in a wooden stool, an unmade bed, a strand of light, are fixed for eternity. pipi’s photographs play at the gateway where the spiritual and the material meet: an ancient forest, a Parisian graveyard, a fallen teepee … pipi herself plays the role of the artist/seeker in their frames. She carries an antique dresser across a meadow on her naked back, or lies as a dead ballerina in a cast-iron bed. Amazingly, these snapshots stem from the flow of modern life, uncontrived and captured through a myriad of photographic means: polaroids, lomo, diana, holga, leica m-8, cell phones, and film (super-8). She creates art to transform, transcend, and communicate her multitude of observations, insights, thoughts and emotions which like meditation are often experienced in isolation. Her work consistently weaves together threads from different times and realities. Her work walks the fine line between a highly personal observation of inner states and a whole-hearted embrace of the world in its complexity and collusion. The result is lyrical and melancholic.

About the venue:
Located in Tribeca, Manhattan, OPENSPACE is a hybrid space for art, design & technology. While curating exciting new art and cultural events, the adjoining atelier functions as a multi-faceted creative studio.
